I create art to honor the places we love. With each painting, I offer a toast to the public lands and the treasured landscapes that are dear to us. Each painting has a sense of playfulness, spontaneity, nostalgia, and reverence.

Curiosity and celebration are my motivators. I am an avid hiker, camper, and backpacker. I love visiting public lands, whether it’s our local park or a more distant National Park. I majored in geology in college, and I used to be an Outward Bound Instructor teaching backpacking and rock climbing. I love being in nature. I celebrate beloved vistas with the scenes I choose to paint. I’m also curious, what will it look like if I paint this? How will it turn out? I have to paint it to find out!

My most recent collection is called “Love Letters to Public Lands.” It’s a series of 20 paintings of local Boulder Open Space as well as several National Parks, and for each painting, I wrote an accompanying love letter to each specific locale. The letters express thanks and appreciation for each public land, and to tell you the truth, they make me teary when reading them. Gratitude can warm the heart.

About Lisa Seaman Art

Lisa Seaman Boulder Artist

I also love to paint bird, trout, dog, and cat portraits, raising a toast to our beloved animals as well as landscapes!

I didn’t study art in college. I was more of a sporty young person than an artsy one. But looking back, I’ve always liked to make things. As a child, I loved building forts out of pillows, boxes, or snow. I’ve dabbled in photography, pottery, knitting, and crochet. I first started painting about 25 years ago when I took some watercolor classes for a year or two. I stopped painting, busy with work you know, but I remember loving how painting calmed my mind and opened my eyes to things. I noticed the shape of tree branches in a new way, and the color of clouds.

In the fall of 2021, I visited an artist, Jacque Michelle, at Boulder’s Open Studios Tour, and I signed up for her acrylic painting class. I hoped to recapture that state of calm I had when painting, and I wanted to try painting with a thicker kind of paint so I could have texture like Van Gogh! Jacque launched me with an excellent foundation! Since then I’ve taken numerous art classes, both in person and online, from at least 10 other teachers. I’ve learned something from each of them, and I continue to grow and try new things.

I love how painting has helped me see the world with fresh eyes. Color, light, shadow, and shapes are so much more salient to me now. My eyes and observations are active as I experience nature (and pets!) when hiking, bike riding, camping, and cross-country skiing. And when I’m not painting or hiking, I sing in a choir, study Spanish, dance Cuban salsa, and make pickles.

For my medium, I paint with acrylics or oils, often in my home studio but also plein air. I make my art with a palette knife because I like the chunkier style, the forced looseness, and the minimal rinsing required.

I’m honored to be a juried Artist Member of Open Studios in Boulder County, and I’m a member of the Boulder Art Association, NoBo Art District, and Plein Air Artists Colorado.

I’ve retired from my corporate job, and now I’m a full-time artist. I welcome home studio tours. Feel free to contact me and we can schedule a tour! I look forward to sharing my love of nature and treasured pets with you via my art.
